This is what a "real" missionary does...

Every morning before we open the office "Elder Hafen" sweeps the steps to the basement.......and does the vacuming. In fact, we both cleaned the office this past week (looked like it needed it pretty desperately)..........You can see the computers where people work on the one wall there............We love this little "hole in the wall".....................

I'm still Learning.

Amanda - I had this wonderful collage and then I just couldn't get it to post on the page.....I'll keep trying............

Love and appreciate everyone for your faith and prayers in us...........we are "busy" and learning SO much - didn't think our little old brains could expand this much! We are loving it and everyone here.
Miss you all and realize more and more each day the wonderful influence you all have on us!
Our prayers are with YOU!

Wena shaping "fry bread"

Go Wena Go!!!!!!!!!!! I tell you her fingers did fly as she shaped these.......Elder Wilson got brave and was shaping a few too.........next time it's my turn! Yummy stuff...............(reminds us of the elephant ears at the fair...........) I know all of our grandchildren would love this!!

Daniel Laughing's home.......

Fry Bread............

Oops............picture went wrong..........after the baptism Daniel Laughing and his Mother invited us to their home for lunch. They were making "fry bread" - reminded me of Mom making bread. Sister Yose didn't measure anything just did it by feel - see how light those little rolls are....then they flatten them with their hands going back and forth - kind of reminded me of pizza......And then into the hot oil and they puff up and are light and fluffy.........(they use fry bread for "everything" ) with honey, powdered sugar, brown sugar, Navajo tacos.......on and on.

We also had corn chowder. This was so interesting and Wena told me it takes forever to make. They take ears of corn and put them into an outdoor oven or under the ground and put steam in with the corn over night and then take it out and let it dry. After this they store it like we would beans. Then when they are ready to cook it they put it in the pot to boil. They had it with chunks of mutton today. I liked the flavor. It is not soft completely. It is not cooked with any salt I don't think, but then individually everyone put their own salt in. Wena told me that you never waste any of it because it takes so long to make. We had watermelon for dessert.........Fun day. Their little home was fun. We met Daniel's two brothers and a sister.
The entire group......Elder Mizelle (from North Carolina), Daniel Laughing, Nellie Begay, Sister Yose, Elder Wilson, Elder Hafen, the two grandchildren, Wena Jesus, and Brother Tulley (ward mission leader)............Wena and Brother Tulley gave the talks (in Navajo) and a prayer in Navajo. Wonderful Day!

Baptism Day!

This is the "women" at the baptism....Sister Hafen, Sister Yose, Nellie Begay, Wena Jesus, and Elder Wilson giving Mikayla a DVD..........As everything else - nothing starts on time here....At 10:00 Nellie wasn't there (it was to start at 10:00)............so we just visited and someone went to pick her up. No one hurries here and things are pretty laid back. In fact, this afternoon Brother Tulley (ward mission leader) came and said - "We missed you at the graduation celebration at the church!" We said we didn't know we were invited..............he said "You don't have to be invited. If there is a gathering here of people you just come - everyone wants to have the LDS missionaries around!" So from now on we'll be a looking for the "gatherings"..............
This made us think of "our Nellie" today since it is her birthday.............You can see a little bit of the church here in Window Rock. They have the meeting here and then went into the room where the baptismal font is - it is just under the carpet with a big door that opens..........Wena Jesus talking to Nellie's granddaughter in the background.

Happy Day Today.........

This is a "red letter day" for Nellie Begay.............She was baptized by Elder Wilson in Window Rock. Nellie is about 80 years old and was so excited. She speaks only Navajo with a very limited understanding of English.......but we did understand spirit to spirit. Elder Hafen conducted the baptismal service and Sister Hafen played the piano. The photo above is of the Elders in our office making the program for the baptism. They were SO excited.

Today we were invited to go to the little branch of the church in Crystal..........had about 35 people there............we spoke and I played a piano solo.......The counselor in the Branch Presidency had invited us and then to his home for dinner afterwards............Brother Thompson is a teacher at a high school here and is white - his wife Mae is Navajo and they have one son Collin who is 13...........What a neat family and what a fun thing to be with them for lunch...

President Boone called us when we got home and asked us to come immediately to his
daughter Janelle's graduation party.............she is going to UVSC in the fall.....They had
tons of family there and it was fun to be with them. President Boone's foster parents
from Idaho were there (his Dad is 85)...........wonderful people. He was with them for
10 years on the placement program. We love President Boone - what a wonderful
man and what a great sense of humor!

We decided to take advantage of being there and went to the Navajo National Monument - it was
wonderful there. Saw some of the cliff dwellings from 1300 from the Tsie people............they told
us when we left the visitors center that if it started to thunder or rain we should get back as soon
as possible...............so of course, as soon as we reached the bottom by the cliff dwellers - the rain
started..................so we really had our aerobic exercise getting up that hill quick!!!!!! We are going
back on a better day to spend some more time.............

Some photos follow....

Navajo National Monument....

We had never seen water like this before...................I think this is what they usually have in the Monsoon season............Huge puddles, lakes and water running everwhere........

We were supposed to go with the other Senior Couples on a little excursion on Saturday - so we went to Kayenta to spend the night in a Hampton Inn (so we'd be on time Saturday morning at Inscription House)..............My goodness - the room at the motel seemed SO big!!!It was so funny - the next morning we were about there when we got service on our cell phone and found out that the excursion had been cancelled because of RAIN.................

RAIN did you say?????????????

We do have one "thorn in our side".........by the name of "Jasper". Jasper frequents our neighborhood and is kind of creepy. Seems to have some problems (probably from drug use).....and is often drunk.........He comes and rings our doorbell, gets drinks out of our hoses outdoors, just basically wanders ALL the time. We did finally have to call 911 one night - they immediately sent a couple of cars over and told us to call anytime he begins to bother us......We feel so sorry for him - but apparently there is nothing people can do to help him.

They came to spray the inside of our home for insects and critters this week - we were just eating our lunch and the guy came right in while we were eating and began spraying. He said he comes every three months..we asked him what insects and critters???? He said, "scorpians, spiders, mice........" Anyway, we are relieved that we don't have any of the above yet!!!

"Hafen's, Hafen's - how does your garden grow?" We posted a picture before I think. The row of peas the missionaries before us planted are about 10" tall now. This kind of reminds us of when the pioneers planted gardens on the plains to leave for those following to harvest. We were excited to see a few potatoe plants coming up and one "mystery plant" poking up it's head this week. We got so enthused about it, we went to Wallmart and bought 2 tomato plants, a cucumber, a green pepper and a zuchini.........the dirt is such a hard red clay - we will just pray and wait (and keep you posted).......

Couldn't Miss the Luxurious Bath!!

We are learning to love our "little blue house"........Should we say on the prairie or house in the "sagebrush"? Either way we love it and are truly learning....

Tis a gift to be simple

Tis a gift to be free............

There is just a quiet calm in the simple ways here that we wish you could all experience -
